Truth About Sex

Truth: Sex, in and of itself, is not a bad thing! The Lord has created almost all of us with a sex drive (Matthew 19:11-12), but He also created a specific time and place for that drive to be fulfilled. The Lord created sex for marriage. Let’s see what the Bible says about it:

“Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me: It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband” (1 Corinthians 7:1–2 KJV).

Fornication is “consensual sexual intercourse between two persons not married to each other.” The Greek word for fornication is porneia, which means “harlotry (including adultery and incest).” The Bible commands us to avoid fornication. Understand that fornication is not limited to those who are married. Singles having sex are committing fornication. Paul teaches us on this issue in 1 Corinthians 7:8–9: “So I say to those who are not married … if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It’s better to marry than to burn with lust” (NLT). The following few verses may help:

“For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (1 Thessalonians 4:3 KJV).

“God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin” (1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT).

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18 KJV).

“Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does” (1 Corinthians 6:18 NLT).

“Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body” (1 Corinthians 6:13 KJV).

“But you can’t say that the body was made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:13 NLT).

When sex is enjoyed by a husband and his wife, it is not bad, scary, or shameful. God created it to be a blessing. He created sex for marriage. Consider the first couple God created.

And the Lord God said, ”It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” … Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. And Adam said, “this is now bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman for she was taken out of man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed. —Genesis 2:18, 22–25

The Lord created the man and the woman to be together in marriage.
